Assistant Professor/Clinician Researcher

The UNC Department of Family Medicine in Chapel Hill is seeking a tenure track Assistant Professor (Clinician Researcher). The Department is interested in a Board Certified Physician with a strong research interest and background primarily in the area of hypertension, particularly in the areas of blood pressure measurement, borderline blood pressure, and pre-hypertension. The candidate will have prior history of successful grant funding, clinical duties which involve seeing continuity patients and performing some medical procedures in the office. The ideal candidate will have prior experience and interest in teaching a variety of learners including medical students, Family Medicine residents, and fellows. The Department prefers an MD with an MPH degree. Salary is commensurate with experience plus excellent UNC faculty benefits.

Pitt County Memorial Hospital is an 861-bed Level I trauma center, regional referral hospital and is the flagship hospital for University Health Systems of Eastern Carolina. We serve as the teaching hospital for the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University.

Medical Director for Hospital Operations

The Medical Director for Hospital Operations provides support and direction to Case Management and the Patient Placement Department to impact length of stay reduction efforts, capacity/throughput issues, utilization management and quality patient care. The Director works for Pitt County Memorial Hospital in collaboration with key physicians and administrative leadership at all UHS hospitals.

We are seeking an organized medical professional who utilizes clinical experience to assist in care planning for patients with complex medical issues. This analytical and highly communicative professional meets and makes rounds with case management leadership to develop individual plans for difficult-to-discharge patients in conjunction with the case management staff. Will work the inpatient case managers to review all patients who do not meet medical necessity criteria upon admission or for continued stays.

Maintain communication with finance staff to identify potential denials and manage high-cost therapies and oversee identification of quality or patient safety issues. Work with attending and resident physicians to facilitate open communication regarding care and quality issues. Review the charts of all patients prior to the hospital issuing a notice of non-coverage. Oversee review of the physician referral line waiting list to determine priority of transfers and support Patient Access Services to prevent EMTALA violations.

The Director collaborates with the V.P. and Administrator of Hospital Operations, the Communications Manager and other clinical leadership staff. Analyze length of stay and other data for quality improvement and work with financial staff to analyze and appeal insurance entity denials. Work specifically with issues of throughput and improve admission/discharge processes. Ensure cooperative transfers between PCMH and other UHS hospitals.

As a physician leader, this professional represents the medical staff at administrative meetings and works closely with the Medical Affairs Office. Participate in budgeting, strategic planning, QC and bed allocation as well as chair the Utilization Management Committee.

Solid knowledge of the health care industry is required with familiarity of PCMH business practices ideal. Proven leadership in influencing staff and physicians to meet organizations priorities is also a plus. A demonstrated ability to work with teams is also needed. A complete understanding of financial imperatives for hospitals plus cost benefit analyses of patient care proposals is a must. Exposure to admission-discharge criteria such as Milliman or Interqual is also appreciated. Computer proficiency is required. Licensed or eligible in NC with a specialty in Family Medicine or Internal Medicine is preferred.
